General Ideas

For Greensboro Urban Ministry and other homeless shelters: Bake a batch of cookies or other goodies. Gather warm clothing or toiletry items. Greensboro Urban Ministry can provide a list of necessary items. Plant a garden and grow vegetables to donate to a soup kitchen.

Hold a canned food drive for one of several organizations that host a community food bank.

Call local nursing and retirement homes and ask the activities director if a resident would like to receive a monthly pen pal letter from your child or the students at your school or club. Once children have established a relationship, ask if they can visit their new friends.

Hold a litter pick up. As a group, identify a park, section of a stream, or neighborhood. Ask friends and relatives to sponsor students for every bag of litter they pick up. Donate funds to an environmental agency.

Make bookmarks for students and adults learning to read.

Participate as a group in The Volunteer Center’s Human Race in March and raise money for the nonprofit of your choice.

Senior Resources of Guilford needs volunteers to deliver Mobile Meals and visit with homebound seniors. Must have own transportation and valid NC driver’s license and insurance or working as part of a team with someone who meets these requirements. Routes provided. Must be able to lift coolers full of meals into car. Minimum one-year commitment. All expenses including mileage are tax deductible. Minimum age 16.
