The Volunteer Center of Greensboro is the first and only North Carolina affiliate of the international Youth Volunteer Corps of America (YVCA). The YVCA is the only national youth service program with the expressed mission of providing team-based volunteer opportunities for youth, ages 11-18.
YVC Mission
It is the mission of the YVC to create and increase volunteer opportunities to enrich America’s youth, address community needs and develop a lifetime commitment to service. First launched in 1987, the YVC model has since been established in communities nationwide. Programs are sponsored locally by diverse community-based organizations such as Volunteer Centers, Hands On, YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, United Way, City Parks & Recreation and school districts. Funding is provided by foundations, corporations, individuals, United Ways, and local and federal government. The program consists of two fundamental components:
Summer Component
This year’s summer component, Summer of Service, will place rising 6th – 12th grade students on project teams. Each team is assigned a Project Leader (a trained Guilford County Schools teacher) and a specific service learning project at a local nonprofit. Teams will work on their project over a course of a 4 week period in July and August. Each team will present their completed project to the host nonprofit, Volunteer Center staff, and Guilford County Schools’ representatives in August.

School-Year Component
During the school year, YVC Program Directors, AmeriCorps members and staff work closely with teachers to design and implement age-appropriate service projects that tie school curriculum to community service. In addition, young people from throughout the community work together on service projects after school, on weekends and during school breaks.
