Summer of Service

This year’s summer component, Summer of Service, will place rising 6th – 12thgrade students on project teams.  Each team is assigned a Project Leader (a trained Guilford County Schools teacher) and a specific service learning project at a local nonprofit. Teams will work on their project over a course of a 4 week period in July and August.  Each team will present their completed project to the host nonprofit, Volunteer Center staff, and Guilford County Schools’ representatives in August.

Projects will focus on one of the following topics: 

  • Environment
  • Issues of Diversity
  • Poverty
  • Arts and Culture

Dates and Times: Participants must attend all scheduled project days.

Week of July 11 Tues, Wed 8am – 1pm
Week of July 18 Tues, Wed 8am – 1pm
Week of July 26 Tues, Wed, Thurs 8am -1pm (T/W)  8am – 5pm (Th)
Week of August 1 Tues, Wed, Thurs 8am – 1pm  (T/W)  8am – 5pm (Th)
Week of August 8th TBD Students will have a Project Presentation
Sunday, Sept 11th Time/Place TBD Students will present their projects during the 9/11 National Day of Remembrance Ceremony

The Summer of Service program will:

  • Encourage youth to apply their knowledge and develop skills as they complete projects
  • Provide valuable service to community agencies
  • Teach youth about their community and important issues
  • Develop teamwork skills
  • Promote an appreciation for diversity
  • Encourage civic responsibility
  • Allow youth to complete 48 service learning hours
